Martin John BHSc (CM), BSc Hons (Env), Lic Ac., MRCHM, MAAC

I graduated with a double degree level (BHSc) in both Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine from the Southern School of Natural Therapies in Melbourne, Australia, which has one of the highest standards for Chinese Medicine qualifications and practice in the West. Following practice in Australia as a member of the Chinese Medicine Registration Board (CMRB) of Victoria, I relocated back to the UK in 2010 and have built a thriving practice here in Frome over the past 12 years. Following building Element Healthcare as a sole practitioner I then co-founded the Frome Therapy Rooms to offer space for other therapists to practice at Turnpike House.

Whilst I’ve been busy building my practice locally I have also been a council board member of the Register of Chinese Herbal Medicine (RCHM), which regulates Chinese Medicine Herbalists in the UK and am also a member of the Association of Acupuncture Clinicians (AAC).  As such, RCHM and AAC members adhere to strict codes of practice and ethics that helps ensure the highest standards of care and professionalism within the industry.

As part of my degree level training I have studied many areas of western medicine including clinical anatomy & physiology, clinical diagnosis, pharmacology, counselling & psychology. I have served clinical internships with Tran Nga of Eastern Medicine, and Steven Clavey, a world renowned specialist in the field of fertility and gynaecology in Chinese Medicine. I have worked in Community Drug & Alcohol Rehabilitation and in support organisations for patients living with HIV. I have further studied multiple advanced forms of acupuncture techniques including advanced distal acupuncture techniques (Tung & Tan styles), motor and trigger point acupuncture, electroacupuncture and Medical Pulse Diagnosis under Bob Doane. These different styles of acupuncture add a rich diversity to tackle most medical problems effectively and I often also may use cupping, moxibustion, blood letting techniques, dietary therapy and qi gong exercises to depending on the condition.

More recently I have been involved in the Jade Screen Project which has been voluntarily treating front line workers in the NHS for Covid and Long Covid and now lecture on how Chinese Herbal Medicine can help recovery from Covid-19 infection. I also lecture widely on the treatment of digestive diseases with Chinese Medicine in training Colleges here in the UK.

My passion for Traditional Chinese Medicine and its incredible ability to treat the whole person rather than simply looking at symptoms or narrow definitions of western conditions grows with every year in practice. Through regular professional development and application of a wide variety of techniques the power of this medicine continues to amaze me.

As a Scientist having previously graduated with an honours degree in Environmental Science, I am forever intrigued by the insightful concepts of Chinese Medicine which are only now finding parallels in modern quantum physics and other 'new' scientific concepts. My goal is to bridge the gap between modern scientific understanding and ancient wisdom which makes modern Chinese Medicine practice so effective and also engages for the patient in their own healing.
